The oil paintings of Esa reflect the challenges he faces in being a minority, not just in his home country Syria, but also his new home, the United States. His art shows how human beings are so similar when it comes to feelings and emotions. Neima believes that our prejudices and judgements create barriers that prevent us from connecting with each other. Prior to leaving Syria Esa dreamed of living in an open country that accepts differences, such as the United States. However, his experience since moving has fallen short of expectations. “I want to enjoy being different but also be unique the way I am” he explains. Esa uses his artwork as a medium to inspire others to do the same.
